Electric Cutters

This cutter category uses an electric motor to drive the blade through the stock. Some but not all electric cutters also have a power drive for the clamp. Some have a manual foot pedal for clamping the stock. Electric cutters fit a middle margin of customers who have enough work to cut that a manual cutter is just too much labor, but don't quite have enough to justify a larger hydraulic cutter.

Electric cutters are also more suited to smaller sheet sizes, say for digital operations, as the knife width is typically under 25 inches. All cutters sold today are extremely safe. The type of safety systems vary from model to model and are sometimes dictated by price.

The best form of safety protection is a light shield. A light shield or light curtain is a pair of arms that form an invisible curtain of light, whenever the beam is broken, the cutter cannot cycle. A less expensive option is a tilt shield, usually made of clear acrylic. This acrylic shield will lower down in between each cut cycle the physically block any foreign objects from getting near the blade. Tilt shields are less expensive but they slow down the cut cycle.
